Different disciplines used terms differently. For example, some people used GILS to mean the policies and programs to provide access to government information. Others saw GILS as a set of technical protocols to facilitate those policies and programs. Neither use is correct or incorrect. Rather, the meaning is context-dependent. Richard Pearce-Moses reported that Arizona had faced similar problems when bringing together librarians, archivists, records managers, and information technologists. To help solve that problem, Arizona developed a thesaurus of terms to help folks from one discipline understand the core concepts of the other disciplines and to identify areas of potential confusion.
