Supporting MaterialDuring the conference, participants discovered that language presented many problems. Different disciplines used terms differently. For example, some people used GILS to mean the policies and programs to provide access to government information. Others saw GILS as a set of technical protocols to facilitate those policies and programs. Neither use is correct or incorrect. Rather, the meaning is context-dependent. Richard Pearce-Moses reported that Arizona had faced similar problems when bringing together librarians, archivists, records managers, and information technologists. To help solve that problem, Arizona developed a thesaurus of terms to help folks from one discipline understand the core concepts of the other disciplines and to identify areas of potential confusion. The thesaurus is available online at http://rpm.lib.az.us/alert/thesaurus/index.html. For More Information
